Laser Hair Removal in Indian Skin — 5 Myths to Ignore

Laser hair removal has gone fully mainstream in India in the last five years. The technology and the marketing haven't always evolved at the same pace. Patients walk in with the same set of misconceptions repeatedly. Here's what we wish more people knew before booking.

Myth 1: "All lasers are the same"

They are not. Wavelength matters enormously, especially for darker skin. Diode laser (around 808 nm) is the safest, most reproducible option for Fitzpatrick IV-V — which covers most Indian skin tones. Alexandrite lasers, common in clinics that haven't upgraded their equipment for Indian patients, are too aggressive on darker skin and risk hyperpigmentation or burns.

We use diode at this clinic. If a clinic isn't able to tell you the wavelength of their laser when asked, that's a sign to look elsewhere.

Myth 2: "It's permanent in 3-4 sessions"

Permanent reduction, not permanent removal — and not in 3-4 sessions. Most patients need:

  • Body areas (legs, arms, back): 6-8 sessions, spaced 4-6 weeks apart
  • Hormone-driven areas (chin, upper lip, lower abdomen): 8-10+ sessions; some patients need maintenance indefinitely
  • Underarms: usually clear by session 5-6

After the initial course, most patients need a maintenance session every 12-18 months. The marketing line of "laser is forever" is not how the body actually works.

Myth 3: "It's painful"

Modern diode lasers with contact-cooled tips are tolerable for most patients. We use lower energy on the first pass to set expectations and adjust upward if the patient reports comfort. "Tolerable" is the honest word — not "comfortable."

Sensitivity also varies enormously by area. The upper lip and bikini line are sharper than the legs or back. We numbing-cream sensitive areas 30 minutes before the session if needed — no extra charge.

Myth 4: "You can do it any time of year"

Active sun exposure 2 weeks before or after a session significantly raises burn risk on darker skin. We schedule full-body protocols starting in late autumn or winter when possible. For patients who can't avoid sun completely, we adjust energy levels and may pause sessions during peak summer.

Myth 5: "You can wax or thread between sessions"

No. Both pull the hair root out, breaking the bond between the laser and the follicle. The next session has nothing to target. Patients who wax between sessions see worse results — and we sometimes have to add 2-3 extra sessions to get back on track.

Trim or shave between sessions only. Both are fine and don't disturb the follicle.

A clinic that doesn't ask your skin type before recommending a laser is one to walk out of. Fitzpatrick assessment takes 30 seconds and changes everything about the safe energy settings.

If you're considering laser hair removal, the first visit should be a free skin-type assessment, not a sales pitch for a package. We do a Fitzpatrick check, a test patch, and explain the realistic session count for your concern. Then you decide.
